Education

I just finished my junior year at The Ohio State University. I am pursing a biology major, and I plan on graduating in Spring of 2020.

Experience

In high school, I received a 5 on my AP Calculus BC test & AP Psychology test. Throughout my college career, I have taken a variety of courses; General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Biology, Microbiology, Immunology & Pathology, Spanish (1-3), Biochemistry, Psychology, and Molecular Genetics. My interest in teaching began when I took a volunteer position with the TOPS program at OSU. In this program, I work with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These students are given an amazing opportunity to enroll in university-level courses and to experience college outside of academics. I have held the positions of educational coach, in-class mentor, and social coach. As an educational coach, I attend a college-level class with one student in the TOPS program, and aid them with in-class assignments, homework, projects, and group-work activities. When I was an in-class mentor, I helped students in a TOPS-only class by answering their questions, explaining concepts, and re-teaching ideas that are unclear to them. As a social coach, I attend social events with TOPS students to engage them in the campus culture. I have volunteered for TOPS since my second semester of sophomore year, and I am continuing to do so next semester! TOPS sparked my interest in teaching, and because of this, I took a position as a teaching assistant (TA) for General Chemistry 1 and 2 at OSU. I have had this position for 2 semesters, and I absolutely love it! I aid students in the laboratory setting by answering their questions on chemistry-related concepts. I also grade lab reports and other lab-related materials. With my major, I have thought about pursing a career in education in the future because of my TA job. For the past two summers, I have worked a camps. The first camp I worked at was through my local YMCA, where I worked with kids aged 5-14 in a variety of different activities. I coached gymnastics, took kids on field trips, and helped in the after-care. I spent my last summer as a counselor at Camp Roosevelt-Firebird. It was a sleep-away camp, so I was always on duty. This camp was a great opportunity for many families, as there was aid in costs. There was a lot of cultural diversity (I had campers from Morocco and Somalia!) Camp was a safe-space; any campers were welcome, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, sex, etc., so the entire summer was an eye-opening experience for me. I watched campers aged 7-15, and I led them in activities such as canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, paddle-boarding, and a ton of other activities.
